There is Great Hope —
Support for Users and Addicts of Pornography
For some, their struggles with pornography use are rooted not only in lust, but in deeper issues of the heart, often a combination of unaddressed childhood trauma, a lost sense of purpose, an inability to regulate stress, or other factors. Whatever the root of one’s pornography use, God knows what we need to heal and grow, and will provide it if we wholeheartedly turn to Him. When we reach out for God’s help and seek a relationship with Him as our ever-loving Father, we can resist the powerful pull of pornography.
He meets our brokenness with grace. Our merciful Father created our brains with the ability to heal and regenerate! It should come as no surprise to us that the prefrontal cortex of the brain, the area damaged by pornography use, can be strengthened to regain control of decision making. As Paul explained nearly two thousand years ago, “Do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may prove what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect,” Rom. 12:2, RSV (emphasis added). Seeking a more intimate relationship with God through prayer and Bible reading, establishing trusted relationships for accountability, learning one’s “triggers” and developing strategies for heading them off, identifying ways to reduce stress levels, and filling one’s life with new and meaningful pursuits are just some of the ways of putting on a “new nature, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator” Col. 3:10, RSV.
Breaking free from the bonds of pornography and stewarding our sexuality is not easy. But for those who put their hope in Jesus’ sinless life, sacrifice, and resurrection, even the chains of pornography can be broken. How blessed we are that “we have not a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin”! Heb. 4:15 As Jesus said, “. . . if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. John 8:33, RSV
