Biblical Worldview: Part One
The Creator’s Purpose
“In the beginning God created…” are the first words of the Bible. At the very beginning of the world that we live in God, the one and only, took chaos, total darkness, and lifelessness and made it a world with order, light, life and purpose.
And God said:
Let there be light…
Let there be a firmament…
Let there be water and dry land…
Let there be vegetation…
Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens…
Let there be life teeming in the waters…
Let there be birds flying in the expanse of heavens…
Let the land produce living creatures
And finally, let us make man in our image both male and female… (Genesis 1)
Step by step God brought this world into existence. From chaos he brought order, wisdom, and beauty. From darkness light appeared, and from lifeless expanse came waters teeming with life, the air above full of flying creatures, and on the dry earth many different kinds of creatures. Finally, humankind was created. Male and female he created them to be in his image, to be like him, to be able to know him.
The Biblical worldview is clearly stated throughout the Bible. The creator of the universe has purpose in his creation and there is purpose for those who choose to serve him. There is a progression through time with a beginning and a completion. God’s will and purpose will be accomplished.
“For the LORD is God, and he created the heavens and earth and put everything in place. He made the world to be lived in, not to be a place of empty chaos. ‘I am the LORD,’ he says, ‘and there is no other. ... Let all the world look to me for salvation! For I am God; there is no other. I have sworn by my own name; I have spoken the truth, and I will never go back on my word: Every knee will bend to me, and every tongue will confess allegiance to me.’" - Isaiah 45:18, 22-23 NLT
“Remember the former things, those of long ago; I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me. I make known the end from the beginning, from ancient times, what is still to come. I say, 'My purpose will stand, and I will do all that I please.'” - Isaiah 46:9-10 NIV
“As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it. You will go out in joy and be led forth in peace; the mountains and hills will burst into song before you, and all the trees of the field will clap their hands. Instead of the thornbush will grow the juniper, and instead of briers the myrtle will grow. This will be for the LORD's renown, for an everlasting sign, that will endure forever.” - Isaiah 55:9-13 NIV
“He is the God who made the world and everything in it. Since he is Lord of heaven and earth, he doesn't live in man-made temples, and human hands can't serve his needs--for he has no needs. He himself gives life and breath to everything, and he satisfies every need. From one man he created all the nations throughout the whole earth. He decided beforehand when they should rise and fall, and he determined their boundaries. ‘His purpose was for the nations to seek after God and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him--though he is not far from any one of us.’” - Acts 17:24-27 NLT
Not only did God create the heavens and the earth with purpose but he has a purpose for each of those who come to him.
“Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed--not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence--continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.” - Philippians 2:12-13 NIV
“He has saved us and called us to a holy life--not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time, but it has now been revealed through the appearing of our Savior, Christ Jesus, who has destroyed death and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.” - 2 Timothy 1:9-10 NIV
In love, he created for himself a family. He created this family with purpose that they may choose to know him and be with him. Each person has the ability to choose to be a part of God’s family. No other creatures have this ability and opportunity since they live by instinct. But we, who are made in His image, can choose to be part of His purpose and His family.
