Biblical Worldview: Part Two
God’s Authority
The Biblical worldview is very clear. From the first chapter of the Bible until the final chapter, the message is unequivocal: There is one God who has all authority and power. He is not part of this world or creation but is the maker, the creator of it. He is beyond us and is the source of all. We are answerable to him and he is the judge of all.
This God, who has all authority, has many attributes which the Bible describes and reveals to all those willing to listen. The Bible describes three sources of revelation about God and his authority.
First is the scripture, the Bible. The prophets of old in the Old Testament declare and reveal the power, the authority, and the glory of God:
“I am the LORD, and there is no other; apart from me there is no God. I will strengthen you, though you have not acknowledged me, so that from the rising of the sun to the place of its setting people may know there is none besides me. I am the LORD, and there is no other.” - Isaiah 45:5-6 NIV
“The LORD, the LORD, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children and their children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation." - Exodus 34:6-7 NIV
The second is the creation itself. It speaks of the creator:
“They know the truth about God because he has made it obvious to them. For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities--his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God.” - Romans 1:19-20 NLT
“…The heavens proclaim the glory of God. The skies display his craftsmanship. Day after day they continue to speak; night after night they make him known.” - Psalm 19:1-2 NLT
And finally, God has revealed himself through his Son:
“God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds; who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become so much better than the angels, as He has by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.” - Hebrews 1:1-4 NKJV
In the Biblical worldview everything comes from this all-powerful God. He is the source of all life and power. He is full of love and compassion but also he is judge and will punish and destroy wickedness. He is the authority for morality. He declares what is right and what is wrong:
“Notice how God is both kind and severe. He is severe toward those who disobeyed, but kind to you if you continue to trust in his kindness. But if you stop trusting, you also will be cut off.” - Romans 11:22 NLT
The teaching of the Bible concerning the power and authority of the one and only God is fundamental to the understanding of the biblical worldview. Therefore, it is the whole “duty” of man to serve God according to the wiseman:
“Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the duty of all mankind. For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every hidden thing, whether it is good or evil.” - Ecclesiastes 12:13-14 NIV
The acceptance of any other authority is the acceptance of another god, namely an idol. That idol may be ourselves or it may be someone representing themselves as someone that has power to provide what we desire, or it may be anything that is desired or loved instead of the one and only God. In essence we serve either the one true God or we serve idols.
“As my vision continued that night, I saw someone like a son of man coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient One and was led into his presence. He was given authority, honor, and sovereignty over all the nations of the world, so that people of every race and nation and language would obey him. His rule is eternal--it will never end. His kingdom will never be destroyed.” - Daniel 7:13-14 NLT
